Achievement Awards
The Foreign Language Department Achievement Awards are given to outstanding students who demonstrate high levels of motivation and performance in foreign language classes.

2022 Award Recipients

Aidan Miller

I am honored to receive this incredible award. Learning any second language is no small task, and I would not be here writing this without the guidance and support of the incredible profesora Callahan.

Aidan is a conscientious, diligent, hard-working student. His great attitude in class is motivating to classmates, and he has an innate ability for Spanish. He has excelled in class, and I hope he will continue studying Spanish. Aidan’s positive attitude and academic dedication will most certainly help him achieve his goals. Haena So

I feel honored and privileged for receiving this award. I would not be who I am today without all my amazing classmates, tutors and most importantly, my instructor, Professor Oppenheim. Sensei has taught me a greater lesson in life that has helped me grow personally and academically. Thank you again!

I have been Haena’s Japanese instructor for the past two semesters. Haena is the hardest working student, and her performance in class has been outstanding. Haena often has to participate in class from her car due to tennis practice; however, her grades have always been at the top of the class. She is very respectful to other students, the tutor, and me. Haena also showed her leadership, which made our class more engaging.

Karen Hope

It is a great honor to be recognized by Fullerton College. My study of German will allow me to conduct original research on such female German composers as Clara Schumann and Fanny Hensel. Vielen Dank to Professor Hornell for his patience, sense of humor, and support of ALL students.

It gives me great pleasure to nominate Karen Hope as this year’s recipient of the Foreign Language Achievement Award in German. This award is bestowed annually upon a student in the German language program who has demonstrated academic excellence in the study of German. Karen embodies those special qualities including great interest, dedication, creativity and an insatiable desire to make progress and improve her language skills. It is truly a great honor to recognize her achievements with this special award.

Luisa Garcia

 

Luisa Garcia was a student in my Spanish 201 class in Spring 2022. From the beginning, I was so impressed by Luisa’s outstanding work ethics. During the semester, she not only delivered impressive written and oral presentations, but her analysis of the films was insightful and contributed immensely to the class discussion. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this Achievement Award than Luisa for all her effort and dedication. Congratulations Luisa!

Molière French Achievement Award
The Molière French Achievement Award was established through the Fullerton College French Film Festival, an annual event that takes place every fall semester. The scholarship is awarded to a dedicated student of the French Language.

Zathia Zarza

I am honored to have been selected for this year’s award. The French Film Festival, French Club, and our amazing class dynamic, made learning French at Fullerton College an enriching experience that went far beyond learning a foreign language. Zathia Zarza’s natural talent for learning French, her dedication to the French language and culture, her exemplary assiduity, and her unparalleled professionalism while organizing the French Film Festival make her the perfect recipient of the Molière Scholarship. Zathia was the pillar of my Intermediate French 203 and 204 classes on Zoom and contributed to the exceptional collaborative spirit among the students. Zathia participated and interacted on Zoom with great poise, curiosity and brilliance. Roberta King Maxwell Memorial Scholarship
The Roberta King Maxwell Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Roberta Maxwell, a teacher of French and Spanish at Fullerton College, and is awarded to an outstanding student of foreign languages.

Angelica Balam Lara

I am honored to receive this scholarship. I am a Spanish major and my goal is to be a Spanish teacher at a university. I am very grateful for having a professor like Lina Callahan who motivates me to keep following my degree. I will always be grateful to Fullerton College for the resources and support I acquired through my academic years.

It has been a pleasure to share the spring 2022 semester with Angelica Balam Lara in my Spanish 204 online class. She is a talented student, always leading classmates in class discussion and projects, always intellectually curious about the short classes we discuss in class. She is planning to transfer to UCI to obtain a degree in Spanish and a minor in Bilingual Education. I trust she will become an engaging educator who will motivate her students to succeed the same way she has motivated her classmates this term. Congratulations to Angelica, and I wish her the best in her future academic endeavors.

Konrad Adenauer German Scholarship
Established in 2019 by Professor Klaus Hornell, the Konrad Adenauer German Scholarship honors outstanding foreign language students who have completed German 102.

Ashley Dioses-Opperman

Studying German has always been a passion of mine and I hope to one day learn it well enough to speak it comfortably. Professor Hornell has been an amazing teacher and I have him to thank for this award and for igniting my continued passion for learning the German language.

This scholarship is awarded to a student in the German language program, who has demonstrated academic excellence in the study of German. Arnold D. and Lorena B. Caudill Japanese Scholarship
The Japanese Scholarship was established in 2019 by professor emeritus Arnold Caudill, a polyglot who taught several languages at Fullerton College during his career spanning decades. The award honors a high-achieving student who will continue studying Japanese at a four-year university.

My time at Fullerton College was one of the best experiences I’ve had, while also helping me on my path to achieve my dreams. I’m grateful to have met Professor Noriko Oppenheim. She is an amazing professor who is passionate, lovely, and kind. I want to thank her for all that she has done and for nominating me.

I was Angela’s Japanese instructor from level 1 to level 4. Angela’s grades were always at the top of her class. She worked hard and was respectful to classmates, tutors, and me. She also showed immense respect for the Japanese language and culture. Her performance in class has been outstanding. Angela was very friendly and delightful and showed her leadership. It made our class a more tight-knit, comfortable, and friendly atmosphere.

Christopher Burgueño

I would like to thank Professor Noriko Oppenheim for nominating me for this award. I have learned so much from her, Yui and my fellow classmates. Fullerton College has also provided the opportunity to make my goals and dreams a reality.

Christopher was an outstanding student in the Japanese program, earning top grades in his classes. Even though he had a full-time job, he attended every class and was a significant contributor. Unfortunately, Christopher faced a few adversities during the pandemic. Despite this, he completed all assignments and earned extra credits. Also worth noting is that Christopher earned the respect of his classmates and tutors. He was an invaluable asset and worthy of this award.
