Pat Spencer presented the division with a certificate and $500.00 for the highest enrollment at census in fall. She also showed a video and spoke briefly about the proposed bond. (At the 11/13/02 meeting, the Board voted to pursue the bond.)
Division Secretarial Duties/Services for Faculty: Liz Kiszely.
Lis Leyson reviewed the long standing policy in the division and department offices that when time allows, staff will help with tasks as requested by individual faculty, but the priority is completing general division/department duties such as faculty schedules, book orders, curriculum, travel, and absence reports. A discussion followed.
Proposal #1: The division should link growth in faculty positions with the need for additional classified assistance. .
Proposal #2: It would be helpful to clarify the ways in which to best use the secretaries. What are the kinds of things that faculty can expect the secretaries to help with? This should be discussed and decided. It is fine to say yes to new growth, but what additional support services will be available? If faculty grows by 2%, there should be an increase of staff by 2%. Deans can request more classified positions; however, at the time the only source of monies for salaries is PfE. It was suggested that PCC might be a good place to start for more money to hire classified. Those present at the meeting concurred that we will need to continue to speak up on behalf of the classified staff and that Proposal #1 should be introduced at the Senate.
