Adam O’Connor sent a message that book buyers should not be purchasing books from faculty unless authorized to do so by the FC Bookstore.  Faculty are asked to remove advertisements for buying books from the bulletin boards in class and in the hallways.

Students need at least 2.5 G.P.A. and the successful of a minimum of 35 units to be eligible for the English Department Scholarship Award.

Minutes of the 11/13/01 division meeting were approved with the correction of changing the word notes to minutes.  The long standing policy of the division is that faculty may ask for secretarial help, but first priority is to serve division and department needs such as book orders, schedules, absent reports, curriculum proposals, and such.  There are

no limitations on asking staff to help with individual professional tasks. Staff can and do help if they have time.  We have a work-study student.  There is no money at this time to add classified staff.   Also, the workspace in  the department and division offices is limited..

Congratulations to Bill Glassman who completed 39 years at FC.

The Humanities Division received  the Director’s Award Certificate from the campus holiday luncheon held on December 11.  Santa says thanks to Sharon Portman, Jeanne Costello, Sue Davis and Lisa Gomber for making this luncheon special and fun.  Additional thanks to all who contributed salads for this event.

II.                  Comments:

Shirlee’s announced she will host  a division Christmas Party at her home on December 15.

III.                Business:

Jessie Blank, Coordinator of the International Student Center, started her job in October; the International Student Center is in the 700 building.  Jessie reports to the Dean of Admissions and Records   This  is the first time that FC has had a program to assist international students.  It is funded by PfE.  The goals for the program are to increase the number of international students at FC, to offer services to students who are currently here and future students, to help students excel in English, ESL or another language program.

Students must have 500 on the written TOFEL, 517 computer based.  The Center works with students who have visas including students who want to change to another status.  We currently have 110 F-1 students.  The  have one part-time counselor.  F-1 students must enroll in 12 or more units and maintain a 2.0 G.P.A.  The international students are allowed to work on campus after being here one semester.  They  can do internships.  Faculty mentors are welcome in helping international students.  Assessment tests are required.  Jessie thanked the division for the opportunity to speak about the international student program.

Heidi Lockhart, Director of the Transfer Center, talked about the various workshops that will be offered in the spring.  The Center hosted nine campus tours this past fall.  Heidi’s extension is 27543.  FC is 9th in the number of students who transfer.

Cindy Vyskocil, Diversity Director, spoke about sexual harassment and

racial discrimination.  She said that laws have changed and courts now

look at who is being harassed.   Harassment can be same sex as well

as opposite sex . She said the academic freedom is limited in that

students can demand a comfortable learning environment.  Comments

can offend a third party who can then claim harassment.

The District does not have a policy in place that prohibits consensual sex between a student and a faculty or staff  member.  She reminded faculty and staff that we are in a position of authority and must not abuse that.  FC policy requires diversity training for faculty and staff.

Reports:

Curriculum: Doug Eisner

Steve Credidio is working on a transfer agreement with San Diego.  ENG and FL – update by February.  Russian has not been taught at FC for over 20 years.  The department may want to consider dropping Russian from the catalog.
